Traben-Trarbach

The city of Traben-Trarbach lies on the River Moselle in the Rhineland-Palatinate of western Germany. The Acher Hof, a whitewashed stone building with a timbered facade and gabled roof is part of an ancient estate dating back to the ninth century. On one of the town's hills is the ruined castle of Grevenburg which was founded in the fourteenth century. It endured many sieges and battles until its destruction in 1734. The Starkenburg Castle is a another ancient monument and the foundations of the Mont Royal Fort are all that remain of the enormous structure built by the French King Louis XIV. However, the most impressive Mediaeval monument is the Town Tower, a beautifully restored stone watchtower that was once part of the city's defensive wall built in 1350. The tower includes a glockenspiel of twenty-eight bronze bells which play at various times throughout the day.
